Education In STEM Degree Subjects In High Demand

In the future, 2010 may be remembered as the year of education. The government has drastically stepped up its efforts to improve education in America at all levels. The public has become greatly involved, and so has corporate America, donating hundreds of millions of dollar to a number of programs aimed at improving our educational system.

In the next few years, the need for added educators will become even more apparent, as new guidelines for teachers qualified in specific areas fall into place. The need for math, science, and technology educators will become still more urgent as the country works to meet the challenges of an extremely global economy. In order for future generations of American students to compete, they must be taught by highly qualified educators trained specifically for particular subjects.

Now may be one of the best times in history to get a college degree in education. People who are interested in teaching one of the STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) subjects will be very high demand. Teachers who have specialized education degrees in a STEM subject may also be eligible for certain government programs.

For example, the government offers loan forgiveness on federal students loans for certain qualified STEM teachers. If an eligible STEM teacher agrees to teach in a designated hard-to-staff school for a certain number of years, the government will forgive up to $17,500 of their qualified student loans. That means teachers who qualify can greatly reduce the cost of their college education.

Additionally, through several grants from the National Science Foundation, STEM teachers have many opportunities to become involved in exciting educational programs. For example the Innovation through Institutional Integration program, or I3 program, awards various colleges and universities grants to create courses for K-12 educators that will provide them with deep subject knowledge and skills that will help them engage their future students. Many of these programs are designed to create masters level STEM educational degrees, to help future educators develop dynamic math and science teaching skills.

The Department of Education also recently announced a multi-billion dollar bill intended to fund and save teacher jobs. According to the Department of Education, $10 billion will support more than 160,000 education jobs nation wide. As the public has demanded more teachers who are qualified, government and private entities have responded.

The STEM Education Coalition, a non-profit support group, works closely with STEM educators to support their mission. It is now becoming widely recognized that STEM education programs must have additional funding and the addition of many more qualified teachers. For that reason, billions of dollars in educational assistance, including funding for degree programs, continuing education, and professional development programs are available to STEM educators.

A STEM degree education may be the most in-demand education degree today. Aspiring educators, who are seeking job security and added benefits including higher pay, may want to think about seeking such an education either via traditional or online college.
